On May 21-23, 2017, following the 2017 IWF Cornerstone Conference in Stockholm, Sweden, IWF members, including IWF President Teresa V-F Weintraub, travelled to Saint Petersburg, Russia to attend an event “Women in Society. Past and Present” organized by Women for Equal Opportunities, a local non-profit.
At the event, members met with prominent women of Saint Petersburg and took part in panel discussions facilitated by IWF’s own Natalia Dubinina, Micheline Bouchard, and former IWF President Barbara Barrett. In addition to conference programming, those in attendance experienced the culture of St. Petersburg.
Global members from IWF Arizona, Montana, Texas, Australia, Israel, Mexico, & Chile, Canada, Delaware, Chicago, France, New York, and Florida were present for the gathering.
After their time in St. Petersburg, IWF President Teresa V-F Weintraub and Board Director Micheline Bouchard visited IWF Russia’s headquarters in Moscow. Here, IWF Russia President Irina Muravieva presented an overview of their Forum’s programs and activities. Individual members shared insights into their professional backgrounds as well as their experiences with IWF . Nearly the entire forum was in attendance including:
• Olga Bessolova, Head of the Commission on Improving Life Quality, Moscow Public Council;
• Nadezda Shvedova, Ph.D. Head of the Center of Socio-political Studies of The Institute for U.S. and Canadian Studies, Visiting Fulbright Scholar;
• Natalia Yakunina, Vice President and Member of the Board, Center of National Glory of Russia
• Larisa Vasilieva, renowned writer
In addition to visiting IWF Russia’s headquarters, Ludmila Guseva, Deputy of the Moscow City Duma, hosted Ms. Weintraub and Bouchard for a tour of the city Duma and a meeting with local women leaders including high-level government officials and representatives of a youth party. Participants discussed the status of professional women and their prospects in Russian politics, academia, and other fields.
