Dr. Maria Magdalena Sandoval Donahue is the Founder of Think Ubiquitous, LLC, a data visualization and communication software development company. She combines her background in geoscience, mobile technology, and art to create data visualization tools, mobile education apps, and other science outreach and education efforts. Her work specializes in interactive data visualizations, science application and community building, report automation, and (geo)science education for agriculture, resource management, ecologic, conservation and rural economic sustainability problems. Dr. Donahue has a research background in tectonics and geomorphology. She lectures at the University of New Mexico, is a consulting geologist, and is authoring two books on the geology of Colorado and New Mexico with Mountain Press, USA. Dr. Donahue utilizes her fascination with the visual aspects of Earth science data and her formal fine art education to create visualizations from Earth datasets (e.g. ocean salinity, fossil records, etc.), which she prints on fabric to create apparel. She is also an active photographer and weaver in the traditional northern New Mexico loom style.
Dr. Donahue is a 2-time Olympic Marathon Trials Qualifier, and is sponsored by Brooks Running Company. She is a USATF Level 1 Running Coach and has held a personal coaching business since 2014. In college, Dr. Donahue specialized in the 5000m and her great love, cross country. She qualified for the NCAA Division 1 Nationals both in cross country and indoor/outdoor track while at the University of Oregon (2001-2005). Her love of running began while watching her father, 1980 Olympic Marathon Champion, Anthony Sandoval, compete. Dr. Donahue is presently training for a third Olympic Trials qualifying marathon, in spring 2019. A native of northern New Mexico, growing up in the mountainous landscapes of Truchas and Los Alamos were the basis for much of her curiosity about and appreciation of Earth processes; her family and cultural ties also ground her interest in increasing science awareness and usability for rural and diverse populations.
