Dr. Vanessa Dorismond works as a first year postgraduate physician resident in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Howard University Hospital. She left Montreal, Canada and her young love for figure skating for the warmer weather of North Carolina. There, with the support of her family, she began her volleyball career. While excelling both academically and on the volleyball court, Vanessa was offered a full scholarship to attend Georgetown University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in English. During her time at Georgetown, she was named to the Big East All Conference Second team in her last two years, and to the Pre-Season Big East team in her last year of college. Despite a broken foot that had her miss almost half of her senior year season, Vanessa persevered and finished her collegiate volleyball career with an offer to pursue professional volleyball in Trieste, Italy for a year. After mastering the Italian language and falling in love with Italian cuisine, she sought a Master of Arts in Creative Writing at Northumbria University (Newcastle, England) and self-published her first book, all while also playing volleyball for Team Northumbria and for Volleyball England. Retiring after two years abroad, Vanessa attended medical school at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, where she served on the medical school council for four years as the organization of student representative for the Association of American Medical Colleges. In light of her passion for women’s health, most especially in underserved populations, Vanessa hopes to further her leadership skills and bring health awareness to the underserved women in the Washington DC metro area.
