Emma Bonino of IWF Italy recently received the Fred Cuny Award from the International Crisis Group. Emma Bonino is the Former European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and former Italian Minister. The International Crisis Group is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to preventing and resolving deadly conflict. Bonino is a pioneer in protecting and promoting women’s rights in the international political arena. The award was presented by philanthropist George Soros, a member of Crisis Group’s Board of Trustees.
Asked about the current refugee crisis in Europe, which has seen some 180,000 people fleeing countries such as Syria and Afghanistan into Europe since mid-October, Bonino said, “I get the impression that we never learn from history, we are always surprised by what happens, we somehow lost our memory and we lost our sight as well. Then, we are suddenly surprised.”
The Fred Cuny Award is named for the American disaster relief specialist and humanitarian who disappeared in Chechnya in 1995 along with two Russian Red Cross doctors while negotiating a ceasefire. This year’s annual International Crisis Group awards which were titled, “In Pursuit of Peace” were held in New York City.
