Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced earlier this week that the Queen approved his nomination of Julie Payette to be the 29th Governor General of Canada. In this role, Payette will serve as the Queen’s official representative for the nation.
From 2000 to 2007, Julie Payette was Chief Astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency. A veteran of two space flights, STS-96 (1999) and STS-127 (2009), she has logged over 611 hours in space.
Payette speaks six languages and is also an accomplished athlete, pianist, and choral singer. She is the recipient of 17 honorary degrees, and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. She is a member of IWF-Canada and was inducted to the IWF International Hall of Fame in 2010.
