IWF Italy co-sponsored an event on January 29th to promote the United Nations campaign to raise awareness and educate people about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) — and to sustain the activities of the International NGO No Peace without Justice — which campaigns for the protection and promotion of human rights, democracy, the rule of law and international justice.
The event was a call to action to end this extreme form of gender discrimination that violates the human rights of women and girls. The United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that at least 200 million girls and women alive today living in 30 countries have undergone FGM and that 3 million girls aged 15 and under are being subject to the barbarous practice each year.
The keynote speaker at the event was Emma Bonino, Italy’s Commissioner for Social and Humanitarian Affairs, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and IWF Italy member.
The event, which was held in Rome, was attended by more than 300 women. Guests of Honor were two African first ladies: Ms. Sika Kaborè of Burkina Faso and Ms. Lalla Malika Issoufou of Niger.
