On February 18, in Rome, a preview of the movie on the life of Nobel Peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai was jointly organized by the International Women’s Forum Italy and the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates.
Malala, the Pakistani school girl who stood up for the right of girls to education, and was shot by the Taliban, is an inspiration to girls and women all over the world. A large number of diplomats, including UAE Ambassador Saqer Nasser Ahmed Abdullah Alraisi, International Women’s Forum members and selected guests attended the event.
IWF member Emma Bonino, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy and former Commissioner of the European Union, delivered the key note speech. She recalled that, when she was young, in Italy, women were often excluded from higher education and, in her own family, it was understood that only her brother would go to university. She did not give up, struggled to obtain a higher education degree, and then started a career that will bring her to worldwide recognition, never forgetting to support women’s rights. She added that girls all over the world should fight against discrimination and injustice, with courage and determination, and Malala Yousafzai is certainly an example to them all.
IWF Italy President Marina Romualdi Vaccari delivered an address in which she particularly thanked the UAE for the role played in saving Malala’s life and Emma Bonino for her presence at the event and her lifelong struggle for women’s rights.
