IWF South Africa member Wendy Appelbaum, the chair of De Morgenzon Estate, one of Africa’s top female entrepreneurs and philanthropists, was recognized this month at the 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards held in the UK. The wine, DeMorgenzon Chardonnay Reserve 2015, reached the final 31 out of over 16,000 wines tasted for the competition. The victory follows a previous win in April at the International Wine Challenge (IWC), taking best-in-competition for the world-renowned Stellenbosch wine-producing region of South Africa.
Wendy is a Trustee of The Donald Gordon Foundation, one of the largest private charitable foundations in Africa and The Helen Suzman Foundation which works to strengthen South Africa’s democracy. She is a member of The Women’s Leadership Board of Harvard University’s John F Kennedy School of Government. Her namesake philanthropic initiative, The Wendy Appelbaum Foundation, initiates, selects and drives programs addressing the health and education concerns of South African women. She is a member of the Synergos Global Philanthropists Circle, a network of leading philanthropists fighting global poverty and social injustice.
